My poor angel. On Tuesday, Zach was at school playing and happy. At about 3:00, he started not feeling well. I thought he had the stomach flu. But, at midnight, he came and woke me up and told me he needed to go to a doctor. What kid asks to go to a doctor- so I knew he must be in a lot of pain. I suspected it was his appendix, so I had him stand on his toes and drop down on his heels (the famous Arnold diagnosis). His pain was unbearable and I knew it was appendicitis.
We drove to the AF hospital and were in the ER before 1:00 am. The ER staff was so nice to him. The doctor checked his tummy and asked lots of questions. He decided not to send him in for more tests and just call the surgeon. Well, Zach freaked out. He decided he wanted to go home. I had to call Scott in Minnesota and let him know what was going on.
A tech named Bill came in to insert an I.V. and draw blood. He was awesome. He got Zach calmed down and explained absolutely everything he was going to do. He showed him the needle and told him how the needle would come out and only the soft little tube would be left. Zach was very brave and in no time at all he had morphine through the I.V. He tried to sleep a little bit while we waited for the surgeon (he had just finished the first appendectomy and was taking in a second- Zach was #3).
By 4:00 am, Zach was being wheeled into surgery. I went to the waiting room and tried to get a little sleep. A little after 5:00 both the surgeon and the anesthesiologist came out to tell me everything had gone well and he was in recovery. Zach has 3 little incisions where they did the laparoscopic procedure. It was his appendix- it was infected but had not burst.
At about 5:40, the nurse came and got me and we took Zach upstairs to the pediatric ward. He was doing well and I needed to go home to make arrangements for the girls and for school. Before I left, Zach asked if I could stop at the store and buy 'National Treasure 2'- way to work it, Zach. Scott's dad, Bruce, came and sat with Zach until about 8:00- thank you, thank you!
I got back around 9:00 and Zach was eating jell-o and looked better. The nurse told me that the doctor's orders said Zach could go home as soon as his vitals were stable and he could keep down oral medication and liquids. Zach got more jell-o, chocolate ice cream, watched his new movie, got some real food for lunch and they sent us home!!!
It was a rough couple of days. He was in a lot of pain and just felt miserable. Yesterday, he was feeling a little better and was bored out of his mind. Of course, there was no one else to take it out on but me- it's a good thing I love him so much!!
Today he's doing even better and I think by Tuesday he'll be ready to go back to school. Field day's out though- poor Zach. Hopefully, Ms. Martinez will have a job for him to do. He can't lift anything for 6 weeks. I hope he's ready for basketball camp on June 2.
I had to mow the lawn today- poor Mom!

What a tough kid. And what a tough mom! I can't imagine taking my kid to the hospital for emergency surgery when my husband was out of town! I hope you get a break soon. Maybe treat yourself to a new movie :)
I feel so bad for that poor kid! I hope he's feeling better and I REALLY hope he's okay for basketball camp!!!
What a trooper, both of you. That would be difficult and scary. i've never heard of the heel thing, have to remember that one. I'm glad everything is okay.

I am truly going to miss the 'Pony.' As I drove away today my heart really hurt. I had so much fun, and I truly gained a great learning experience from working there. Thank you for giving me a chance!
I'm impressed that you both made it through in one piece! What a week for it to happen, too. Onward and upward from here, right? Glad he's doing better!
